The World Day for Health and Safety at Work was celebrated on 28 April, which was established in 2003 by the International Labor Organization (ILO). Always active in promoting a culture of safety, ISOIL continues to engage in the prevention of accidents at work, occupational diseases and contagion from Covid-19.
Deaths and accidents at work: world statistic and the importance of prevention
“There has been progress on many fronts in the world of work. But work-related deaths, accidents and diseases, are still major causes for concern. Decent work must also be safe work.” Juan Somavia, ILO Director-General
According to ILO estimates, around 2.3 million women and men die each year because of work-related accidents or work-related illnesses worldwide. This corresponds to over 6000 deaths every day. Unsafe practices in the workplace involve enormous expenditure in human and financial terms every year (approximately 4% of global GDP).
Experience has shown that a preventative safety culture is beneficial in avoiding workplace accidents and illnesses.
The Covid-19 pandemic has brought to everyone’s attention the importance of implementing certain prevention and protection measures (physical distancing, hygiene, cleaning, training and communication, personal protective equipment, smart working) to ensure places of healthy work and reduce the risk of contagion among workers.
